The development of the typeset resulted from two separate factors. It evoked a font the school had once officially used and, with the interior piping subtly projecting a graphic interpretation of the inherently vague 'cannoneer', it responds to the institute's nickname for the sake of the school’s athletics program.
The interlocking PI logo's inspiration lies in an old institute emblem still found on some of the original buildings on Pratt's campus. Hybridized in format with the defined typeset, it becomes an effective sports logo for the basketball team. This new graphic identity could become the face of an athletic program that desperately needs to reclaim support from its student body.
